Updated February 27, 2017 12:43:20 American actor Bill Paxton, who rose to stardom with roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as Aliens, Twister and Titanic, has died at age 61 after complications from surgery, his family said in a statement. Paxton's most well-known films A Bright Shining Lie, 1998 Titanic, 1997 Twister, 1996 Apollo 13, 1995 Aliens, 1986 Terminator, 1984 Paxton, who appeared in dozens of films over some four decades, had recently starred in the HBO television series Big Love, about a polygamous Mormon family, and acted alongside Tom Cruise in the film Edge of Tomorrow. For his role in Apollo 13, Paxton won a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture in 1996. He was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards in the best actor category for his work in Big Love and the 1990s miniseries A Bright Shining Lie. Paxton was currently in the CBS drama Training Day before he went in for surgery. The network has not yet announced whether it will continue to air the completed episodes. It was not immediately known what surgery Paxton, a Texas native, had undergone. "It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery, " a family representative said in the statement. "Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable, " it said. His death adds a sad note to the Academy Awards ceremony. Paxton was never nominated but appeared in several Oscar-winning movies and was beloved and respected throughout Hollywood and beyond. Paxton brought a reliably human dimension to big-budget action adventures and science fiction. He was, sci-fi fans like to point out, the only actor killed by a Predator, a Terminator and an Alien. "I feel like I'm a regionalist and a populist who's never fit in among the intellectuals, " he told AP in an interview from 2006. "I think that's where the heart of American art is. My greatest roles have been in regional films, whether it was One False Move or Frailty or Simple Plan or Traveller. " Paxton once said the hardest part of his career was not the work itself, but the time in between. "You know all the time I've been in this business, which is a long, long time now, I go from having incredible days like shooting the part of Sam Houston and then all of a sudden I'm home and I'm out of work and it's two o'clock in the afternoon, I'm in my boxer shorts watching Turner Classic Movies, " he said in 2015. Friends and fans pay tribute Nearly 200 storm chasers paid tribute to Paxton by spelling out his initials using GPS coordinates on a map depicting the heart of Tornado Alley. The effort coordinated by Spotter Network spelled out "BP" to honour Twister's leading man — a role that inspired a generation of storm chasers. Co-star Helen Hunt joined those paying tribute to the star on social media. "Bill Paxton was a big-hearted, thoughtful and honourable person, " Paxton's Big Love co-star Chloe Sevigny said in a statement. In April of 1970, three men were sent into space to walk on the moon. Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert are true survivalists of what could have been a complete disaster. They would be the infamous crew of the Apollo 13 space mission.
In Ron Howard's 1995 release of Apollo 13, Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon play the crew that would be launched from Cape Canaveral and into history. The flight that went wrong and had Lovell (Hanks) utter those famous words, Houston, we have a problem. When a routine task aboard their ship goes horribly wrong, these three men are thrown into a life or death situation.
In the shadow of the 1969 lunar landing, the first ever, these men were nobodies to the general public, until "it" happened. With media flocking the Lovell's home, wife Marilyn (Kathleen Quinlan) must muster up all the courage she has and make sure her family keeps it together. She and the whole world waits for the three men to return home safely.
Flight director Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) also has the difficult job of finding a way for these boys to come home. He and his team of experts work around the clock for nearly a week to ensure the safe return of the crew. Every time something seems to be going right, there is another problem. CO2 levels run high, exhaustion, power, and the troubled heat shield are all problems the crew at Houston the crew thousands of miles above Houston confront.
With so much stress and a problem arising every other minute, tension grows on board with the crew. The fact that Jack (Bacon) is replacing what would have been Ken Mattingly (Gary Sinise) makes the other crew members a little cautious of his skills and his performance levels. They trusted Ken, but Jack is new and since he performed the task the caused the problem, they are very suspicious of him. The men must keep it together if they went to get home in one piece.
This movie shows true courage in one of the worst space accidents the world has ever seen. Howard does a great job of preserving this unbelievable story of bravery and survival. So many times movies about something that actually happened get caught up in computer graphics or try to hard to appeal to everyone when this movie uses better acting, directing, and does have good computer effects as a bonus. This movie lifts off the ground and clears the tower.
When life is threatened, people are given an extra sense to put them in survival mode, where they do far more than what they ordinarily do when their lives are not threatened. 2:04 that scene where you see Apollo 13 right next to the Moon, and the Earth in the background. is just amazing. UPDATE: I'm adding the update to here as well since the other post has not been approved yet: As some of you had mentioned, and therefore will come as no surprise, there was 0 mention of the Apollo 13 quote in our msgs. Both he and I remember discussing it that day and he remembers I sent him the video. Everything else remains, us discussing ET, discussing Snow White, etc. But nothing about Apollo 13. I'm sure this was as anti-climatic as you can imagine. For me it's insane that they're gone, but what can you do. Since that update is lackluster I want to answer some stuff that came up in my original post yesterday and maybe try to break this down in a way that will make more sense to people questioning the validity of what we're saying/experiencing when we say this quote/scene had changed and has now changed back. I'll start by trying to be more clear and spare no details about what I am saying happened. I had heard about the Mandela Effect a long time ago and only knew the major ones existed. I just thought it was neat but never read too much into them. Until one day, on some lazy Sunday in bed, I deep dove into them. That entire day I was msging my friend as we often do and was sending him stuff I was finding. I sent him ET, Snow White, and the Apollo 13 scene in question. A lot of the posts back then were "Apollo 13 quote has changed from 'Houston, we have a problem' to 'Houston, we've had a problem. " I watched the scene over and over in multiple places. I read everyone saying "It used to be 'we have a problem' and now it's changed". I spent a lot of time watching it because it looked not right. It gave me that feeling of like uncanny valley where something just seemed off. I could find no version of "Houston, we have a problem. " It was like it never happened and we all just remembered it incorrectly. However, because I was skeptical and was just having fun reading these posts, I brushed it all off as me misremembering the scene, changed my viewpoint of it and just logged it as an odd thing. Time passed and I again visited this sub (a couple years ago now). I started seeing people saying "The Apollo 13 flip-flop" and paused for a moment and didn't understand what happened. I then googled the scene once again, and sure enough it had changed back to how I'd always known it, "Houston, we have a problem. " This time however I did not have a moment of doubt in myself. It changed. There are no other versions showing what I'd seen that day. And on top of it, I cannot find any posts from back then mentioning how it used to be. I had spent a considerable amount of time that day on this. Some points I'd like to make: 1. ) If it was always "we have a problem" I would not have given 2 shits about that scene. I would not have even registered it as interesting ("A bunch of people said it changed and changed back, that seems dumb since it's still as it always was"). I was looking for Mandela Effects only. Because that scene was not how it used to be it was a part of my day. 2. ) There are no differing versions. You will not find that alternate version I witnessed that day. You will not find older posts mentioning it, the only ones left here are those of us who experienced the flip flop. 3. ) I am not talking about the actual mission, I am talking about the movie. I am relaying to you an actual day in my life where I watched that scene directly, over and over, in multiple places. It had changed. Now it has changed back. 4. ) To the person who called me dramatic, fuck off. I was not a believer whatsoever. I cannot explain to you the existential dread of realizing that this is probably a real phenomenon happening. It's easy to see other people talking about it and kind of be interested in it, maybe believe in a couple yourself lightly and think it's kind of cool and fun to theorize about but it was a totally different feeling seeing something change, only to change back, literally before my eyes. It has completely changed my outlook on things. 5. ) Lastly, I understand it's hard to believe a lot of this stuff especially when some posts on this sub can be extremely silly and dumb. There are a lot of posts where people just forgot a very popular actresses name or something, and that's like 80% of the posts here. It's hard to sift through and take it seriously. I think it's good they do the effect of the year because it helps showcase ones that probably should be seriously considered in this. I am being serious about this. I'm not here saying some memory from my childhood that is foggy should be taken as absolute truth. I was a fully grown adult. This was not that long ago. It was not a small insignificant day. I was reading about this all all day and specifically those 3 movies had the largest impact that day because I was able to watch the scenes over and over and scrutinize for myself as opposed to just reading posts on here. I am being genuine and serious. Something fucked up happened. This is the original post: I was on this sub years ago reading stuff for hours and hours one day. I was also msging my best friend about it telling him about each one I was seeing and going into long diatribes about how crazy it was. I remember watching the Apollo 13 clip over and over because seeing him say "Houston, we've had a problem. " was crazy to me. It sounded so weird and not right. I was telling my friend about it in detail being like, "He doesn't say "we have a problem" now it's "we've had". Then a couple years ago I came back to this sub and was reading some of the newer posts. I suddenly saw one that said it was now back to "we have a problem". I watched the scene and it literally felt like my mind had snapped. I could not fathom what was happening. I asked my friend if he remembered me telling him it had changed and he said yeah, and I told him it was back to normal. He just sort of shrugged and was like weird but I was not as calm. For 2 weeks I was horrified. I felt like the world was being ripped out from me I don't know how else to describe it. I had just been reading these posts for fun here and there and then suddenly I was 100% a believer and it actually felt pretty horrible, like seeing something you aren't meant to see. My friend sometimes goes back through our msgs (it's google hangouts FYI) and sends stuff from years ago, like funny conversation we had or memories we forgot about. I realized that means I can probably locate that day I spent on here sending him all the shit I was reading. When I get home to my laptop I'm gonna go searching and try to post whatever I said back then about all the effects I was reading about.

The Service Module On the Apollo spacecraft, the Service Module (SM) was intended to provide most of the consumables such as oxygen, water, and power for the mission. It was also designed to serve as the primary propulsion and maneuvering system of the spacecraft. The explosion of the oxygen tank however, led to the loss of the consumables and rendered the service module nonfunctional. The SM was retained until just before reentry to protect the command module heat shield from the possible degrading effects of long exposure to the cold of space. The Command Module Normally, the Command Module (CM), which was equipped with couches, served as the crew compartment and control center. Able to accommodate all three astronauts, the CM was also designed for reentry. Although the command module had sufficient power and consumables for a reentry, the service module provided these necessities during the rest of the mission. The command module had to be "powered down" after the accident to avoid depleting its systems and rendering it incapable of performing the reentry operation. The Lunar Module The Lunar Module (LM) was designed to be used only for making the landing on the Moon and providing an operating base and living quarters while on the surface. On this mission, however, it acted as a "lifeboat. " With its separate systems for power and consumables, it allowed the crew to preserve the command module supplies for reentry operations. Also, as the service module could no longer provide propulsion, the LM descent engine was used to perform the maneuvers necessary to alter the spacecraft trajectory for the return to the Earth. The Crew James A. Lovell, Mission Commander, was born March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio. He received a bachelor of science degree from the U. S. Naval Academy (1952) and was chosen with the second group of astronauts in 1962. He was back-up pilot for Gemini 4, pilot of Gemini 7, back-up command pilot for Gemini 9, command pilot for Gemini 12, command module pilot of Apollo 8, back-up commander for Apollo 11, and commander of Apollo 13. In May 1971, he became Deputy Director of Science and Applications at the Johnson Space Center. He retired from NASA and the Navy in March 1973. John L. Swigert, Jr., Command Module Pilot, was born August 30, 1931 in Denver, Colorado. He received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado (1953), a master of science in aerospace science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1965), and a master of science in business administration from the University of Hartford (1967). He was chosen in the fifth group of astronauts in 1966. He was scheduled to be the back-up command module pilot for Apollo 13 but was moved to the prime crew 72 hours before the launch in place of Ken Mattingly who had been exposed to measles. Swigert took a leave of absence from NASA in April 1973 to become Executive Director of the Committee on Science and Technology, U. House of Representatives. He resigned from NASA and the committee in August 1977. Fred W. Haise, Lunar Module Pilot, was born November 14, 1933, in Biloxi, Mississippi. He received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Oklahoma (1959) and was chosen in the fifth group of astronauts in 1966. He was back-up lunar pilot for Apollo 8 and Apollo 11, lunar module pilot for Apollo 13, and backup commander for Apollo 16. He was commander of one of the crews who flew shuttle approach and landing tests and had been selected as commander of one of the shuttle orbital flight tests but resigned from NASA in June 1979. Back-up crew for this mission were John W. Young (back-up mission commander), Ken Mattingly (back-up command module pilot), and Charles M. Duke (back-up lunar module pilot). Ken Mattingly was removed from the crew two days before launch because he had been exposed to German measles. Reentry required the unusual step of undocking the lunar module, which had been retained for the flight back to Earth, in addition to the separation of the damaged service module. The lunar module had remained attached to the spacecraft to preserve the maximum electrical power in the command module for entry. The reentry was similar to previous flights and landing occurred at 142:54:41 at 21°38'24"S latitude and 165°21'42"W longitude. The landing was within sight of the recovery ship, Iwo Jima, and the crew were on board within 45 minutes. None of the primary misson objectives was accomplished. The mission was aborted after nearly 56 hours of flight due to the loss of service module cryogenic oxygen and consequent loss of capability to generate electricity or to provide oxygen or water. Two secondary objectives related to the impact of the S-IVB stage on the Moon, two scientific experiments not related to the ALSEP, and some photography were accomplished, however. But In reality, the speech at Rice university wasn't hitting home with those in attendance at the time. Kennedy wanted cheers at a videotaped speech of him declaring a new national goal, but he knew he wasn't going to get it. And now you can see what he did, which is very clever. He purposefully inserted a line before the one we all know, a line most people don't remember: Why does Rice play Texas? The audience laughed and cheered for that and Kennedy knew they would, he didn't wait even a moment and immediately went on to the next line, raising his voice and going full historical showmanship. He had his moment, he had that line recorded on video with the many people surrounding him cheering on as he says it, even though they were actually cheering because of the line that came before it. With that, Kennedy could go to congress and ask for the funding. Now that's someone who understands politics.

Enthusiastic Savion 62. Watch cats stream broadway. Yo i saw this and i thought it was pretty good, yes some of it was a bit uncomfortable, and i didnt like the over the top cgi, but i thought the music and choreography was incredible. (although i didnt rly like the cockroach scene like most ppl) also the movie has more plot than the initial broadway musical 🤷♀️ i did not like how like half the actors treated the movie seriously and half treated it very jokingly also yeah it was a bit too sexual at times.
Cats Watch stream of consciousness. Loved it. I also loved the musical. If you hate/don't understand the musical, this isn't going to magically change your mind. CATS is supposed to be a dance spectacle. It is what it is. It's supposed to be weird because it's about people playing cats with a very loose plot. Now the movie gives us a more complete plot without rearranging the musical, which I thought was nice for the most part. YES THE CGI CAT HAIR IS WEIRD AND IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH SO THAT IT RUINS THE MOVIE FOR YOU DONT SEE IT. ITS WEIRD OH WELL. But after awhile you just get used to how they are "dressed."

I'm feeling tired just thinking about explaining myself and the annoyance, disappointment and... almost hurt I experienced while reading "Normal People". I want my money back! Throughout the book I kept thinking why, why is this not working for me? Why I'm becoming more and more annoyed? Why don't I care? Why?? Maybe because I am no longer a target audience of the book. Nice enough writing and observations but somewhat dull and infantile. The very notion of the two people, seemingly perfect for each other, ruining each other's lives over and over again drove me mad. It became repetitive, then it became boring. I just could not stand reading about on-off relationship of these young damaged adults while such important matters like domestic abuse, depression and mental health in general were hugely overlooked. I really cannot see why the novel made it to the Man Booker Prize longlist. And yes, perhaps it's not a one star book but at this point, this is what I feel. You know what I reminded me of? I didn't feel that the characters were "real" and didn't really care what happened to them. I'm only reading it because it's on my MA reading list. First up: UGH PUNCTUATION. I hate this no-quotation-marks style. Hated it when Cormac McCarthy used it, hate it now. I know it's a stylistic thing, but... well, I guess I'll just say it's not a style I like. Normal People is a story of abuse. It's the story of Marianne who goes from terrible relationship to terrible relationship and allows herself to be abused because it's all she's ever known. In a way, it's gripping because you just want Marianne to get out of this, get out of all this crap she's living with, but she just goes from bad to worse. Everything in her life is tied around Connell and his acceptance/rejection of her, and it's ridiculous because even though he doesn't actually hit her or anything, it's obvious (to me, at least) that he's an oblivious idiot who is obviously using Marianne for his own benefit. It's not to say that she didn't get anything out of it--she did--but if this is what relationships are like in the 21st century, I'm glad I'm not in one. Maybe I'm too prudish for this book. Marianne has a warped idea of "submission" and part of the story veers into something BDSM-like relationships, except Marianne did not seem to like it very much, even if she somehow craved it. On the other side, it also explores Connell's anxiety and depression, and how desperately he needs Marianne in his life to make him feel normal and in control, even though he's seeing/dating other people. It's just... messed up. The shifting timelines--each chapter jumps a few months, and then hops back a little to cover important missed events--was sometimes a little confusing. The constant segueing between present tense and past tense feels fluid at times, but awkward at times. Maybe I'm not a very close reader but with all the jumps, it gives the book a very floating/fluid feel, and I sometimes don't really know when it is anymore. All in all, Normal People is a dark, stark look at relationships and youth in Ireland. While I warmed to the two main characters in this book, again something just felt a bit cold or detached. I was left feeling a bit unsatisfied.
