Plot [ edit] In England's Lake District, Peter Rabbit, his cousin Benjamin Bunny, and triplet sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, spend most of their days picking on old Mr. McGregor and stealing vegetables from his garden. They are friends with a kindhearted local woman named Bea who spends her time painting pictures of the rabbits as well as the surrounding nature. Bea took on a motherly role with the rabbits after their mother's death. Their father had been killed and eaten in a pie by McGregor when they were still young. One day, Peter is forced to leave his jacket in McGregor's garden and goes back to retrieve it. However, it was a trap set by McGregor who catches him, but suddenly dies of a heart attack due to decades of unhealthy eating habits. Enthralled, Peter invites all of the local animals and takes over McGregor's manor. Meanwhile in London, McGregor's great-nephew, Thomas McGregor, an uptight, controlling workaholic, works in the toy department of Harrods department store where he waits for a promotion to associate general manager. He indifferently accepts the news about his great-uncle's death, someone he was completely unaware of, but is infuriated over losing the promotion to a lazy nephew of the managing director and is fired for losing his temper. His now-former manager encourages him to get a hobby and spend some time in the country. When Thomas learns that his great-uncle's manor is valuable and that he's inherited it, he decides to appraise and prepare it for resale in order to start his own toy store to get even with his former employers. He kicks out Peter and the animals and begins to upgrade the security of the garden wall and gates, despite Bea's objections. When Peter and a reluctant Benjamin sneak back into the garden, Thomas catches the latter and attempts to drown Benjamin in a river, but hesitates. Benjamin's relatives rescue him; Thomas instead accidentally drops a prized set of binoculars that Bea had given him earlier, forcing him to retrieve it. Thomas and Bea end up falling in love with each other, which causes Peter to become jealous and determined to separate them. Peter and Thomas start a war with each other by setting traps and other offensive nuisances. Things get out of hand when Peter rewires an electric fence set up by Thomas, prompting Thomas to throw dynamite in Peter's burrow. After the rabbits trigger Thomas' allergy to blackberries, Thomas attacks them in the garden with some of the dynamite and tells Peter that his antics caused him to become aggressive. When Peter detonates the dynamite to prove to Bea that Thomas was using it, he ends up blowing up the burrow, which causing the tree on top to crush Bea's art studio. Bea ignores Thomas's explanation of the rabbits' involvement and breaks up with him. Thomas goes back to London to work at Harrods again. Peter feels remorseful for what he has done, and upon learning that Bea intends to leave the neighborhood, he and Benjamin head to London to bring Thomas back. Tricking Thomas into thinking he was imagining the rabbits’ ability to talk, Peter explains to Thomas to follow his heart. They rush back to the country, where Peter shows Bea the detonator and presses it for her to see; thus confirming Thomas’ previous claims that the rabbits were responsible for the explosion. Peter and Thomas explain to Bea and plead for her not to move away. Wishing to remain with Bea, Thomas no longer wants to sell the manor; but they discover an unpleasant wealthy couple (who Thomas had encountered earlier and been tormented by) had already bought the house and finalized the sale. Peter, his family and friends use their tricks to force the couple out of the house, allowing Thomas and Bea to move back in. Thomas and Bea resume their relationship, and he allows the wildlife to take food from the garden within reason. Peter and his family restore the burrow and the yard with Thomas and Bea's help. Thomas sets up his own toy shop in the village, where Bea showcases her paintings of the rabbits. [21] Trailer criticism [ edit] The first trailer received negative feedback from critics and fans of the character, many of whom labelled the film as being too modern and insulting to Beatrix Potter's works. Collider called the trailer "garbage" and a "low brow 'comedy' cringe fest". [22] Stuart Heritage from The Guardian stated that "the Peter Rabbit film looks like the result of some blisteringly inept manhandling [... ] there's something genuinely harrowing about the sight of Peter Rabbit – gentle, Edwardian Peter Rabbit – thoughtlessly injuring some birds, or grabbing a pile of lettuce leaves and making it rain like a banker in a strip club, or literally twerking" and argued "there is no way on Earth that [Beatrix Potter would] have ever given the green light to a slow motion car crash like this. Although I never owned one of those bulky Sony S-VHS monsters with that oversized red record button so proto-reminiscent of Ren and Stimpy ’s infamous candy-colored “history eraser button, ” I absolutely recall my first Hi8 and, long prior to that, my dad’s old Kodak Super-8mm film camera which once discovered was immediately deployed to stop-motion animate my own Jurassically clumsy tributes to my favorite filmmaker of my youth, the late, great Ray Harryhausen. (I mourn the fact that my 30-second epics of Brontosaur on T. Rex action, complete with crimson gore provided by the 1970s kidhood modeling clay of choice, Caran d’Ache, were forever lost somewhere on the way to adulthood. ) Director Robbins’ enticingly unique VHYes is many things: a Dada-esque assemblage of mid-Eighties era pop culture, a series of often laugh-out-loud bizarro blackout sketches modeled mostly on the television fare of the time, a moderately melancholy love letter to the unexpectedly giddy power of home VHS recorders when placed in the hands of a 12-year-old, and a thoughtful riff on the addictive nature of the ever-voyeuristic camera eye. Mostly though, it’s about the meandering adventures of Ralph (McNulty), who receives the camera as a Christmas gift from his father (an unrecognizable Tim Robbins, the Jack Henry's father) and mother (Allen). Along with his best friend Josh (Braslaw), Ralph takes to taping snippets of everything on 1987 television, from late-night soft-core Skinemax parodies, to a Bob Ross-inspired "The Joy of Painting” with Joan (Kenney in wonderfully full-on disturbathon mode), and an Antiques Roadshow doppelgänger featuring What We Do in the Shadows energy vampire Proksch. In between there’s cut-and-paste scenes of the two besties blowing up cherry bombs, investigating the local haunted house, and just generally behaving like any free range 12-year-old given a license to film. The beauty of VHYes is that Robbins made the genius aesthetic decision to film the entire thing using actual VHS and Betamax cameras. Given Ralph’s pre-teen attention span, few of the television and commercial parodies overstay their welcome. There’s an inspired talk show bit that mirrors the sequence in David Cronenberg’s Videodrome in which Deborah Harry, James Woods, and “Brian O’Blivion” discuss the ominous future of the rapidly changing televisual landscape. Also scattered throughout Ralph’s tape – which portentously just happens to be his parents' wedding ceremony VHS he snagged on accident – are random moments of his mom and dad and the seemingly downwardly spiraling state of their marriage. This overlays something of a shadow over VHYes ’ otherwise chaotic and scattershot in-camera anti-editing. Kudos to child actors McNulty and Braslaw, who give pitch perfect performances as birds of a feather exploring a sometimes hilarious albeit potentially grave new world via the magic of VHS. To quote Videodrome ’s aforementioned telepresence O’Blivion, “The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena … Whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Television is reality, and reality is less than television. ” And that is, by the end of the 72-minute-long VHYes ’ gleefully immersive, intermittently profound “found footage, ” a lesson Ralph osmotically absorbs through the VHS viewfinder of his life. Is it just an Eighties-drunk exercise in pastiche, or perhaps an experiment in slow-burn psychological horror for the Adult Swim crowd? Could it even be a disguised indictment of a generation that sat watching infomercials and dopey porn while its democracy passed the point of no return? Jack Henry Robbins' VHYes is a bit of all that, poured into a form that begs for midnight-movie consumption. The son of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Robbins briefly enlists both parents onscreen here, while relying more heavily on a small array of comic performers familiar from TV. Though hardly groundbreaking in either its content or its aesthetics, the film is more serious than it initially lets on, and can only benefit from the VHS nostalgia that has, often irrationally, taken root in some quarters. Shot entirely on VHS and Betamax, the pic's conceit is that it is the result of a Christmas gift whose recipient should have been more careful: When pre-teen Ralph (Mason McNulty) starts experimenting with his family's new video camera in December 1987, he unwittingly uses the tape of his parents' wedding as he runs around filming everything from fights between his dinosaur toys to his attempts to shoot off fireworks with best pal Josh (Rahm Braslaw). (Those who've actually used a camcorder may wonder how he managed to leave big swaths of wedding footage intact while recording stuff before and after; the not terribly-offensive cheat is necessary to support a theme the film will eventually get around to. ) Very quickly, Ralph realizes he can use a cable to record what's on TV; he plugs in and records a spree of channel-surfing that is hardly dictated by the merits of whatever happens to be onscreen. The clunky programs we witness sprinkle familiar faces among actors who look like they were plucked from the actual period. Thomas Lennon plays the co-host of a TV shopping network, currently hawking a Confederate Army memorial pen; the inimitably nerdy Mark Proksch plays an expert on an Antiques Roadshow -like program who explains the suspiciously bizarre origins of ordinary-looking artifacts. We see aerobics classes, nightly news and cop shows. We sit in on a Bob Ross-style painting tutorial that gets less Bob Ross-like with each passing minute. Its host Joan (Kerri Kenney) doesn't only host Painting With Joan, but stranger programs, like the unsettling Sleeping With Joan, which is pretty much the opposite of the gently wholesome Joe Pera Talks You to Sleep. While Joan and others give things an air of drug-addled discomfort, some program snippets contain hints of a more clear-eyed world view. The perfunctory scripts of porn films we see are built not around hunky cable-repair guys or pizza-delivery dudes, but scientists researching global warming, or blonde lesbian aliens who are forced to navigate American attitudes toward illegal immigration. Stranger and more on-target is a current-events talk show whose guest starts expounding on "Tape Narcissism": a phenomenon of indiscriminate self-documentation she feels will lead its victims to psychosis. To the show's host, her predictions sound so hyperbolic as to be insane; to us, she's describing the age of social media. So it goes, with occasional clips in which Ralph documents bits of domestic discomfort he doesn't quite understand. Viewers who stick with the ADHD skit-like material will be divided about whether this familial theme ties things together satisfactorily — and about whether sticking to a single target, a la Between Two Ferns, makes more sense for those who would mine clunky idioms for laugh. For those on the fence, a detour into found-footage horror will only complicate the question. As a chronic user of cannabis I've been looking for new experiences to relieve the boredom. I've recently had the chance to try Blue Lotus. I got hold of 30g of dried flowers. I had read only very sketchy reports of this, one of an MDMA like high and another of an opiate high. So I had no preconceptions about what I would feel. This was taken after weeks of domestic stress brought on by painting and decorating of the family home. The weekend I tried the lotus was the first chance I had had to really relax for many weeks. After smoking a small amount of cannabis and grass we tried the following: I had read that 3-5g dried flowers was a single dose, so I eyeballed a total of 10g into a cafetierre and poured on boiling water and allowed it to steep for 10 minutes before pouring. My partner and I shared the brew which was very bitter - but not impossible to drink with added sugar. After 30 minutes, I felt a very slight stone. It didn't seem to increase at all as we waited so we tried smoking a joint made up with some of the Lotus. Strange taste, but not nasty. It didn't seem to have any effect. After about 45 mins, we both agreed that it would have been less trouble to take a couple of OTC codeine for the effect we were getting. I decided to more than double the dose by making a tea out of almost all the remaining Lotus. This took the dose up to about 12-14g per person. We drank this at about t+1hr. And smoked another joint made from Lotus. We went out to eat in a restaurant feeling giggly but placid and serene, like we'd had a large dose of codeine and some joints. The most interesting thing happened once we started drinking wine. The effect seemed to be strongly synergistic with alcohol and I can only describe the experience as 'dreamy. ' Food tasted good and we felt that the setting was tranquil and romantic and entirely non-threatening, even though we were obviously very stoned in a public place. After that, memory is hazy. Once back home, we cuddled and kissed a lot, in a romantic, non-sexual way and I guess we went to bed at some point and slept solidly for 12hrs or more. The whole of the next day (Sunday) we were *totally blissed out*. It was a fantastic feeling of serenity and tranquility. Again, memory is hazy but one thing that struck me was that I smoked only one cannabis joint. Average for a Sunday is at least three. I just didn't need it. We both felt really chilled out and dreamy. We sat and listened to music as we often do. There was nothing particularly noticeable about the effect on sound/music and vision. Nor any tactile sensory effects but cuddling and contact was beautiful and that's how we spent most of the day. We drank another bottle of wine that evening and the effect increased very noticeably again and returned the very giggly feelings. Fortunately both of us had holiday on Monday as we got up late again and there were still remnants of an opiate like effect, down to the level of OTC codeine now. I would summarise this as an extremely pleasant and favourable experience. The tea is bitter, but bearable and far from nausea inducing. The high was like a medium-strong opiate drug, with some of the effects of cannabis. There was a cuddly, warm and romantic feeling that you could associate with either opiates or MDMA. It was good to do this with my partner but it might have been OK with friends too. There was a very strong synergy with a moderate amount of alcohol. I will definitely try this again, but I will steep the Lotus in a bottle of wine over night (as is reported to be an alternative). I am sure that this would result in a much lower dose needed to get the effects. It may also change the curve of the experience. It was a good alternative to cannabis, but I see no reason not to combine them for a deeper stone. Drawbacks are - it took a long time to come on about 2-3 hrs and some wine before we really knew we were onto something exciting. It has a long lasting effect which could be a drawback if you haven't planned for it. The biggest drawback is just how little memory of the experience I accumulated. I know I had a beautiful time, but I don't remember very much of it. My memory of it has not returned over time. Just a dreamy haze. Great for escapism but no good for those seeking meaningful experiences - though by all accounts, we had a very big dose. DOSE: 4 tsp oral Nutmeg (ground / crushed) Having just been dumped by my girlfriend and being immersed in the gray swirling vortex of clouds that is Portland, Oregon. I decided that I needed an escape from my troubles. It was April, and me and my friends were all still in school. Nutmeg sounded interesting to me as it is just a household spice. The idea that it could get me high was just something I had to try for myself. I went down the street to an organic food store near my house and purchased some bulk nutmeg: about seven nuts for $1. 77. I pulverized the nuts with my physics text book and ground up the chunks in a coffee grinder, and put precisely four teaspoons in a plastic baggie. I was going to go to the beach tomorrow with my friends, and I was going to get high (not on marijuana because I'd given it up for lent). I awoke early the next morning to leave for the spot I was getting picked up by my friends. Before I left I ate two teaspoons of the dreadful stuff. It tasted like someone was making Chai in my throat at first, and then it just got disgusting. I took the bus across town and waited for them to roll up in their car. As I waited (for two hours), I looked up at the sky. It was a morning sky with the sun rising in between patches of gray and white clouds. To me it looked beautiful, like a big orange egg yoke smiling at what would become a wonderful day. This could have been intensified by the drug, but I doubt it and I remember having the odd feeling that the sky was closer to me than usual, almost like a ceiling directly above me. That, I attributed to the nutmeg. When my friends finally arrived, I hopped in the car and they showed me the psilocybin mushrooms they were going to eat and the marijuana they would smoke. I responded with a firm 'not me' and I whipped out my bag of nutmeg and started eating the rest. The taste of it was bad for me, it felt like eating sawdust and I felt a bit a twinge of nausea. Fortunately, I have a very weak sense of taste, and this permitted me to eat it all the old fashioned way. On the way to the beach (three hours where we were going), I played a miniature guitar to distract myself from the nausea of both the nutmeg and the car ride (I'm not used to riding in cars with automatic transmissions). It was during this drive (T +5) that I began to feel the effects of the nutmeg. It was like a drunken/stoned kind of buzz, except that I still felt like I could think clearly, and according to the people around me, I was. We actually got to the beach shortly after I could feel the nutmeg, and once there, I took in the bright white of the beach and the salt smell. My friends turned on some loud music and started eating mushrooms and smoking marijuana, and I sat down and played some guitar. I remember looking at the ceiling, which had a stucco-ed texture, and it looked like it was slowly moving away from me. I was playing guitar while I was looking up, and while I wasn't looking at the neck, I could clearly see it in my mind. I had absolute control over the instrument, and my friends were all really impressed. After they'd done their drugs and we'd settled into the beach house, we all walked down to the shore. I was the only person seriously funked up at the time, and I still remember how cool it looked and felt with the salty air and our beachball games in the crazy wind. We walked down to haystack rock (which is this huge outcropping on the oregon coast) it was awesome. Everything took on a surreal quality and it felt like the world was a bright and beautiful place. After a while on the beach, we went back to the house. It was during this time that I noticed my heart beating really fast. I thought I'd lay down and try and rest my head, so I layed down on a bed and closed my eyes. The instant I closed my eyes I saw these odd hallucinations which were, in ways, the most vivid hallucinations I'd ever seen. At first, I just saw these amoeba-shaped blobs of bright shifting colors, and then I opened my eyes and shut them again. This time, I saw a Jamaican band leader in a high-school-band-type marching band usiform playing a marimba with a loose calypso rhythm. He appeared to be like a moving stained-glass window, and as he played, I began to hear the music he was making inside my head. I tried to tell my friends about this when we bought some ice-cream, but they really weren't interested. We went for a drive with one of my friends without a license driving, and I freaked out because he was really bad. After that, we returned to the beach and ran down the dunes until it got dark. Going down the dunes felt liberating, and over my vision appeared a slight white haze that gradually intensified. And I had intense afterimages of everything I saw. Looking back on it, I can't remember any exact times I went down the dunes, I just remember how it felt. When it was dark, we went to the beach one last time and made a fire. Everyone was getting down with their girlfriends, and me without mine, I decided to ask this girl who I had met that day if she wanted to make out with me. Surprisingly, she said yes (I think she was getting back at her ex-boyfriend who was on the trip). So we did a little of this and a little of that. We drove back that night, and I didn't sleep until I got home (at about one in the morning). I was really tired. The next day, I was able to reflect on the experience, but there was still a white haze over my vision. I realized I shouldn't have made out with that girl (she not my type, I couldn't really talk to her, it was not a good thing). But what was the most disturbing was the fact that I could still feel the nutmeg in me. I went to dinner with my parents that night, and it felt so wierd, like I was barely on top of the conversation, and that at any moment, the next comment might put me completely under the tide of words. Time passed, and my daily sleep at that point was very low. I was taking classes starting at 7:20 AM, and I was doing homework and stuff until about 11 PM every night. I was not getting enough sleep for my standards, and I became enveloped in the white hazy nutmeg life. I remember sitting in Physics class and understanding the words that our teacher was saying, but not comprehending their meaning. It was just like a part of my brain was not switched on. Furthermore, one day in my history class, I was trying my hardest to pay attention, when suddenly, an huge purple plasma V emerged from my teacher's chest framing his head. I was gaping, open-mouthed at the spectacle, and I don't think I will ever forget that. After lent, my life returned to normal. I would only think about doing nutmeg if I had a lot of time to waste. It was an interesting experience, and it felt beautiful when I was actually high, but the coming down period was very wierd and prolonged. I was just going to go for something at the store, and I already tried DXM and had a pretty bad trip, so I wasn't going to go that route. I decided on a box of caffeine pills to see how that would be for a change. I first took 4 of the 200 mg pills with little effect, so I decided to finish off the pack with the last four. About half an hour later I started to feel really bad, so I tried to make myself vomit up what I had taken. I ate right before this, so I had a hard time puking it up. Tried drinking a few cups of water to help it come out, nothing. I don't remember puking much, but I got a little out of me eventually. This is where the bad part came into play. I guess I was near the front door at one point, and I had a seizure. I remember my mom coming in the door, and I guess I woke up then. Boy did I feel terrible. I couldn't talk right, see right, and barely could walk. I stumbled my way to the toilet and puked my guts out. I guess my mom knew something was wrong and called 911 while I was in the bathroom. The next thing I knew the EMS crew was in my house and led me to the awaiting ambulance. I was still out of it, and the EMS asked for my name and birthday, and I couldn't even remember what it was. I got to the hospital about 11:30 PM where they put me in a room at the ER, and my parents arrived shortly after. I came to a bit then, and was still throwing up. I guess I had another seizure sometime while in that room because I woke up some hours later with an IV in me and was in a new room. I spent the next 2 days in observation. I was sore all over from my muscles tightening up on me, but they wouldn't give me any pain pills because they knew of my abusing of the pills. I know now, that Zoloft and caffeine do not mix, and can cause these seizures. Now I have to wait 6 months to be able to drive again due to state law. Be careful, be safe, don't abuse pills.
